THERAPY
I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) accredited psychotherapist and Certified Transactional Analyst. I have a long-standing interest in how exposure to trauma affects health outcomes including our mental health and worked for many years in the fields of domestic abuse and safeguarding within nursing, health visiting and the public health arena. Prior to retraining as a psychotherapist I worked in the field of public health and led on a commissioning project relating to violence and domestic abuse which included setting up a domestic abuse perpetrator programme and commissioning other violence related services.
EMDR
I am an EMDR practitioner (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) and have used this modality extensively with military veterans and police officers. EMDR helps you process the negative images beliefs and body sensations associated with traumatic memories that seem to be ‘stuck’. Unprocessed memories like this can contribute to a range of mental health challenges, flashbacks or feelings of fear, anxiety, and dysregulation. EMDR employs a technique called bilateral stimulation during which a therapist will guide the client through eye movements, tones or taps in order to move a memory that has been incorrectly stored to a more functional part of the brain.
EMPLOYMENT
I am currently employed part time by Humberside Police as their Senior Psychotherapist and manager of the police mental health team. In private practice I work from my peaceful therapy room in the East Yorkshire Wolds. This enables me to offer the option to work outdoors should the client wish to do so.
CLINICAL SUPERVISION
I am a UKCP accredited clinical supervisor and hold a Diploma in Clinical Supervision. Supervision is an integral part of my life as a therapist, and I believe that the presence of a ‘safe other’ promotes reflection and professional accountability and is essential for personal and professional learning and growth.
